By Laura Tribe and Alexandra Zakreski Yesterday CJFE joined forces with Al Jazeera English to hold a rally in Toronto's Nathan Phillips Square calling for the release of journalists detained in Egypt. Our rally was a part of a worldwide campaign, with “Journalism is not a crime” events taking place in over 40 cities. Australian Peter Greste, Canadian-Egyptian Mohamed Fahmy and Egyptian Baher Mohamed have been detained since December 29, 2013, while their Al Jazeera Arabic colleague Abdullah Al Shamy has been held without charge since August of the same year. Al Shamy has been on a hunger strike in protest of his detention for over a month. Below are highlights from the Toronto event.
