CJFE is deeply concerned by reports that American journalist Dan Heyman was recently arrested for asking questions to White House aides Tom Price and Kellyanne Conway at the West Virginia Capitol. Heyman's arrest was baseless, and troubling for the state of press freedom in the United States. Read more
48 rights groups strongly condemn the brutal murder of popular blogger Yameen Rasheed in what is believed to be an attack motivated by his political and social commentary. Maldivian authorities are urged to hold all perpetrators to account and to implement reforms to improve the broader free expression environment in the country. Read more
Canada Drops out of Top 20 on World Press Freedom Index as Global Press Freedom Recession Intensifies
CJFE is gravely concerned by Canada’s decline in the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) annual World Press Freedom Index. On April 26, 2017, RSF unveiled the 2017 Index, which ranks 180 countries according to the level of freedom afforded to journalists. This year, Canada has fallen from 18th to 22nd place, continuing a severe drop over recent years. Read more
CJFE deeply concerned by persecution of journalists in Tanzania for reporting on Acacia and Barrick Gold mines
CJFE is deeply concerned by reports that journalists in Tanzania are facing persecution for reporting on mines operated by Acacia Mining, a Barrick Gold majority-owned subsidiary. The reports have come through CJFE's Journalists in Distress program, which provides humanitarian assistance to journalists around the world whose lives and well-being are threatened because of their work. CJFE is deeply concerned by the recent murders of three journalists and shooting of another in separate attacks in Mexico this month. Over the past few years, there has been a significant increase in journalist killings and attacks in Mexico, with many taking place in certain regions in particular, namely Veracruz. Read more
