On October 31, 2015, Tareq Rahim, an intellectual, poet and blogger, was attacked with two of his colleagues by a group of suspected Islamists wielding machetes and cleavers. Just hours later a secular publisher, Faisal Arefin Dipan, was hacked to death in his Dhaka office; he is the fifth secularist to be killed in Bangladesh this year. Read more
We, the undersigned free expression organisations, call for the immediate and unconditional release of Mohammed Ismael Rasool, an Iraqi fixer for VICE News. Rasool has remained imprisoned in Turkey on charges of “aiding a terrorist organization” for over two months despite the release of two British colleagues with whom he was initially detained. CJFE is concerned by the crackdown on Turkish media that is seen as critical of the government in the lead up to Turkey’s November 1st election. On October 28, Turkish police raided and seized the headquarters of Koza-Ipek, a media group owned by an ally of Fethullah Gulen, the U.S.-based leader of the Hizmet movement and a rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. CJFE is concerned about recent charges against two British journalists and a local fixer who were detained while reporting from the south-eastern Turkish province of Diyarbakir. A Turkish court has charged the journalists with “aiding a terrorist organization” and ordered their arrest pending trial. Read more
