CJFE Tara Singh Hayer Memorial Award
- On November 18, 1998, only a week before the
inaugural CJFE Press Freedom Awards, Tara Singh Hayer, editor of
the Indo-Canadian Times and recipient of the Order of Canada,
was assassinated in the garage of his Surrey, British Columbia
home. It was the second attempt on his life, the first having left
Mr Hayer partially paralysed. The murder, the first of a Canadian
journalist this century, shocked the community with the realization
that freedom of expression issues are not only a problem outside
our borders. The Indo-Canadian Times continues to publish,
led by an editorial board that includes Dave Hayer, son of the
former editor.
- The CJFE Canadian Press Freedom Award was
renamed in honour of Mr Hayer.
