2009 Awards

The 12th annual International Press Freedom Awards was held at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto on Wednesday, December 9, 2009. This year's event was hosted by Lloyd Robertson, anchor of CTV National News and Heather Hiscox, Host of CBC News: Morning.

The theme of the 2009 event was the culture of impunity that allows the murder of journalists to go unpunished. More than 1000 reporters have been killed on the job in the past decade, many of them were murdered - 90 per cent of these crimes have gone unpunished.

The CJFE awards gala was made possible by the support of returning Evening Sponsor Scotiabank, Platinum Sponsor CTV and Reception Sponsor CBC News, along with the valued support of other organizations and individuals across the media, legal, academic and business communities.

The gala dinner brings together corporate sponsors with an influential group of journalists, publishers, editors, media executives, business leaders and senior public servants. They all come together to honour the courage of journalists around the world and to let the community know they stand in defence of press freedom.

The 2009 event raised over $80,000 to support the work of CJFE.
