Crowdfunding critical analysis on free expression in Canada (Update #2)

By Julie Payne

As we head into the long weekend, we have just passed $2000 and are 40% of the way to our goal. We still need to raise almost $3000, but we believe we can make it if we keep telling more people about CJFE and this important campaign.

One of the best parts of raising money through an online campaign has been watching this community of people who have supported us grow. Some of you we know already – and you have supported us in the past – but others are brand new supporters and it is so encouraging to us that you found your way to our campaign and signed on to help our cause. If you haven’t already, please do join our email list for monthly updates about our work. You can sign up on our website at cjfe.org.

I want to give you a couple of updates about how the Review of Free Expression is progressing – the articles just keep rolling in. I have several new articles on my desk at the moment. One, about anti-SLAPP suits, explores how the rest of Canada can learn from Quebec’s lead. Another looks at the life and death of Bill C-30, also known as the “Spying Online Bill.” And a third introduces me to some of our leading thinkers on free expression online. For all those students who contact us at CJFE and ask if free expression is a big issue here in Canada – yes it is. And a fascinating and complex one to boot!

Finally, a quick update about our launch event: we have a date and a venue! We’ll be launching this year’s Review on Thursday, May 2 at the very cool Norman Felix Gallery at 627 Queen Street West, Toronto (that’s right near us at Bathurst and Queen). We’re also delighted that, completely by chance, the Gallery’s exhibit that week will be the year-end exhibition festival for Ryerson University’s School of Image Arts called “Maximum Exposure.”
More news on tickets and speakers to come, so stay tuned.

Thank you again,

- Team “What you don’t know CAN hurt you.”
