CJFE endorses global petition to remember June 4 massacre in China

We would like you to take a moment to remember the Tiananmen Square massacre on June 4, 1989. Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) endorses and supports Wang Dan's Global Petition Campaign for the 10th Anniversary of Tiananmen Square. Please sign the petition on the Web site at http://www.june4.org, or send your name/city/country to: petition@june4.org, and urge your friends and colleagues to do the same. Dissident Wang Dan planned to deliver the petition on the anniversary of the massacre in June to Chinese President Jiang Zemin. THE PETITION DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO OCTOBER 1999. Wang is the most prominent leader of the student protests in 1989. He headed China's Most Wanted List after the military crackdown on June 4, 1989. Wang was arrested in 1989 and again in 1995 and twice sentenced to a total of fifteen years in prison. Wang was released on medical parole in April 1998 and exiled to the United States. Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations Her Excellency Mary Robinson, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights We, the signatories of this petition, call on the Chinese Government to: 1) re-evaluate the official verdict on the June 4th, 1989 Tiananmen pro-democracy protests and bring to justice those responsible for the human rights violations committed; 2) release all prisoners of conscience including those still in prison for their 1989 pro-democracy activities and review the cases of all political prisoners; 3) put an immediate end to harassment, detention and imprisonment of Chinese citizens exercising their legitimate rights to freedom of expression, freedom of association and freedom of religion; 4) demonstrate a willingness to respect the rights of all Chinese citizens by proceeding quickly to ratification and implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).
