Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE), Canada’s leading organisation in promoting and defending freedom of expression, is seeking applications for the full time position of Executive Director.
CJFE monitors and reports free expression and access to information in Canada and abroad. CJFE believes in the free expression rights of all people, and encourages and supports individuals and groups in the protection of their own and others' free expression rights.
We need a person who is excited about the aims of CJFE and will bring their experience, commitment and strategic vision to support and direct the work of the board, volunteers and staff to raise public awareness about freedom of expression and developing a solid base of support for CJFE.
We are looking for a strong leader who wants to be part of a growing team who will contribute their superior communication skills, build strong strategic relationships with key stakeholders including funders, CJFE members, government and media partners.
We are a small organisation with a big job and are looking to strengthen our financial capacity and increase our impact. We want someone who likes to stay on top of what is happening in Canada and the world and will always be on the lookout for relevant connections for CJFE. The Executive Director of CJFE will bring their energy and curiosity to the job and provide the voice required to raise the profile of free expression in Canada and the important work of the organisation.
Vision and Strategic Leadership
Leads the continuing development of CJFE's strategic direction as a strong advocate of freedom of expression in Canada and around the world
Fundraising and Financial Management
Develops fundraising strategy in consultation with the Finance committee, and implements that strategy including fundraising, donor relations and reporting
Communication & Relations
Develops strategies, as CJFE’s public voice increases, for raising the profile of CJFE and builds and maintains strategic relationships with donors, partners and allies
Manages the implementation of the strategic plan, including work planning, project development, fundraising and budget planning
Human Resources Management
Ensures that there is a good and healthy working environment for CJFE staff and volunteers.
CJFE Board of Directors & related committees
Reports to the CJFE Board of Directors and supports the Board and committees in their activities
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
• At least 5 years of management experience or equivalent
• Superior communication skills –written and verbal
• Understanding and interest in human rights including freedom of expression
• Ability to work alongside, motivate and empower staff, volunteers and Board
• Strong understanding of finances of small to medium non-profit organizations
• Sound experience in fund-raising and strategic partnership building
• Understanding of and or experience in media
• Fluent in spoken French
• Excellent organizational skills
• Significant experience working in the non-profit sector
• Sense of humour
This position is based in Toronto, may involve flexible hours and occasional local/international travel.
