Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is seeking applications for the one-year contract position of Action Alert Network (AAN) Coordinator (French and Arabic). The International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX), www.ifex.org, is a network of 95 organisations worldwide that defend and promote the right to free expression. The IFEX Secretariat, or Clearing House, is based in Toronto, where it is managed by the IFEX member organisation CJFE, www.cjfe.org. Job Description Summary The Action Alert Network Coordinator works with other Coordinators to: • Edit, prepare and file alerts, advisories, press releases, etc. from IFEX member material for timely distribution via the AAN • Disseminate prepared member materials by email and on the IFEX website • Regularly translate documents from French into English • Manage large flows of information received via various email accounts • Assess, evaluate, compare, categorise and prioritise large volumes of informational material submitted by IFEX members • Attend to ongoing IFEX member correspondence in English and French • Participate in overall IFEX programme and project development, and team meetings In addition, as part of the AAN Coordinator's Arabic-language information coordination role, he/she will: • Assure a liaison role between AAN staff and the Outreach Coordinator responsible for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region • Oversee and promote efforts towards the circulation of Arabic-language information via application of existing guidelines • Coordinate the distribution of Arabic-language alerts and other information from MENA-based IFEX members, and of the weekly Arabic-language Communiqué Qualifications • Fluency in English and French (required); excellent written French (required); Arabic-language skills (preferred) • Excellent analytical, editing, communication, writing and proof-reading skills with strong attention to detail - journalism and news editing experience a strong asset • Advanced computer skills - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook • Experience uploading content onto websites (IFEX uses a Content Management System) • Ability to work to deadline • University degree in related discipline or equivalent experience - e.g., in journalism, political science, international development or French • Understanding of human rights, freedom of expression and democratic development issues • Ability to exercise sound judgment while working independently and under pressure • Diplomacy and proven ability to work with people from various cultures and backgrounds • Excellent organisational and administrative skills, strong attention to detail • Must be eligible to work in Canada How to Apply: Please send a CV and a statement of interest that includes the following information: • your interest in working with IFEX in this position • your background in French translation and editing in English and/or French and Arabic • other information that might be of importance for our assessment of your application • two or three references: names, relationship, contact details; if possible, two of these should be related to your translation and editing experience Send your application via email by April 22, 2011 to hiring [at] ifex.org with "Hiring Committee: Action Alert Network Coordinator" in the subject line.
