By Julie Payne Although we’re completely consumed with editing at the moment, we thought it was worth taking a break to give you all a quick update about progress we’ve been making on the Review. We are so pleased to have passed the 50% mark on our crowdfunding campaign! With nine days left we have $2170 to raise if we are to meet our target of $5000. Thank you once again for getting us more than halfway there! Right now we are working on one of the most important sections of CJFE’s Review: the Major Court Decisions in Canada. We are thrilled that we found the perfect person to write and research this year’s decisions, Anita Mielewczyk. An investigative journalist for many years, she tired of facing lawsuits and decided to go and become a lawyer herself. She’s perfect for us, don’t you think? Another piece of good news on the Major Court Decisions in Canada 2012/2013 is that we have a brand new sponsor – Ad IDEM/Canadian Media Lawyers Association. Ad IDEM is an organization made up of lawyers who represent the media across Canada, and they are dedicated to the protection and enhancement of free expression in Canada and abroad. We’ve worked with them for many years on legal interventions for important free speech cases, so we’re delighted to launch this new collaboration. And finally, some updates for everyone who is planning to attend our event to launch the Review on May 2. The event finally has a name: “Free to Speak.” Short and to the point, it’s a perfect description of the evening’s activities. A cocktail reception and salon, the night will feature speakers from diverse backgrounds who will each briefly discuss what free expression means to them. The wonderful Anna Maria Tremonti, host of The Current, has agreed to emcee the event, and we have three really interesting speakers confirmed so far:
- • Michael Healey, Canadian playwright, The Drawer Boy and Proud
- • Franke James, visual artist and climate science activist
- • Elizabeth Renzetti, columnist for The Globe and Mail
