Peter Raymont

Filmmaker, journalist and writer Peter Raymont is the producer and director of over 100 documentary films during a 30-year career. His films have taken him to Ethiopia, Nicaragua, India, the High Arctic, and throughout North America and Europe. He is the recipient of 35 international film awards including the Canadian Genie for "Best Documentary" for The World Is Watching a critical examination of the role of the media in Nicaragua, and a Gemini for his six-hour series on the business of hockey. Raymont's films are often provocative investigations of "hidden worlds" in politics, the media and big business, as well as Native, social and environmental issues. His films have been broadcast on numerous TV networks around the world.

His career began in 1971 at the National Film Board of Canada in Montreal where he worked as an editor, director and producer for seven years. While at the NFB, he taught film and video production in the Canadian Arctic. In 1978 Raymont moved to Toronto and established his own independent film and television production company, Investigative Productions. The first project was the 1979 documentary - History On The Run, an examination of the work of journalists covering the Canadian federal election campaign.

  • Graveyard Shift, 6 x ½ hour television series featuring the lives of late-night workers. (Life Network, 2001)
  • A Scattering of Seeds: The Creation of Canada, 52 x ½ hour television series featuring individual stories of immigrants who chose Canada as their home (History Television, SRC, TVO, VisionTV and SCN, 1997-2000)
  • Toronto: City of Dreams, a 3 hour documentary series on the history of Toronto (CTV, 2000)
  • Rwanda: In Search of Hope, a one hour documentary chronicling thirteen Canadians' trip to Rwanda in the aftermath of the genocide (VisionTV, 1999)
  • The New Ice Age: A Year in the Life of the NHL, a 6 hour mini-series inside the fascinating world of professional hockey (CBC, 1998)
  • Passing the Flame: The Legacy of Women College Hospital, a historic tribute to Women's College Hospital (WTN, 1999)
  • Hearts of Hate: The Battle For Young Minds, an unflinching look at the powerful influence of racist groups over young people (CTV, 1995)
  • Chasing the Dream, inside the gritty world of Minor League Baseball (CBC, 1993; Sportsnet, 1999)
  • Between Two Worlds, the tragic story of Inuit hunter, Joseph Idlout (Global, 1990).
  • Raymont has also written for the Toronto Globe and Mail and Canadian Business Magazine and has produced a number of radio documentaries for the flagship CBC Current Affairs radio program, Sunday Morning.

    Raymont is a founding member of The Canadian Independent Film Caucus, a lobby group that argues for an independent voice in Canada's film and television industry.
