Donner/CJFE Journalist at Risk Fellowship

Mission Statement

The Donner/CJFE Journalist at Risk Fellowship aims to provide a deserving foreign journalist with a mid-career sabbatical in which s/he can spend an academic year at Massey College in Toronto auditing courses of his or her choice, expanding contacts with Canadian colleagues and acquiring new journalistic skills that can be put to use upon return to his or her country.

Background

Since its inception 22 years ago, CJFE has helped save lives and win freedom for journalists around the world. It has also given financial support to dozens of colleagues under its Journalists in Distress Fund. And it manages the Clearing House of the International Freedom of Expression eXchange (IFEX), an international network of 57 groups devoted to free expression.

CJFE continues this tradition of service to journalists abroad by teaming up with the Donner Canadian Foundation and Massey College to offer the second annual Donner/CJFE Journalist at Risk Fellowship. The ideal candidate will be a working journalist who faces danger in the course of performing his or her duties.

The Fellowship covers: transportation to and from Canada, accommodation in the Toronto area, tuition fees at Massey College, and a modest allowance.

In order to be considered for a Fellowship, candidates must:

  1. Be fluent in English so as to benefit from study at Massey College;

  2. Undertake to return to the country from which they came and to the practice of journalism after the Fellowship;

  3. Obtain written permission for leave from their employer (if applicable) and a written commitment that they will be rehired on their return (if applicable);
