Free expression in Canada: It’s not all good news

Monday, April 28, 2014
We’re excited to introduce one of the incredible images contained within this year’s Review of Free Expression in Canada. When we began planning this year's Review, we wanted something special to help us mark the fifth anniversary of this unique publication. We wanted an image that would capture the importance of the Review, while highlighting the growing challenges facing free expression in Canada. So, we asked creative agency Juniper Park to come up with something to help us make a splash—and they knew exactly what we needed! We love what they've come up with, and hope you do too.

Check out this amazing video from the photo shoot:

The inspiration:

We call this piece “Not all good news.” Fifth anniversaries are typically causes for celebration. But the Review is full of examples when freedom has been inhibited. So the anniversary is a bit of a good news/bad news story. The balloon is a happy reference to birthday parties. The smoke canister is a more sinister reference, because it is a tool used to suppress free expression. - Terry Drummond, Executive Creative Director, Juniper Park Read the full 2013-14 Review of Free Expression in Canada.
