We are active participants and builders of the global free expression community. CJFE manages the world’s largest free expression network, IFEX, issuing 2500 alerts a year and mobilizing media workers and civil society globally on free speech issues. We are also active participants in international campaigns to promote free expression and to protect journalists in danger.

  • Canadian citizen Naser Al-Raas arrested in Bahrain (UPDATED)
  • CBC TV crew fears being denied entry to Panama
    Three journalists with Canada’s state-owned CBC TV, who set off from Toronto today to cover a dispute between indigenous groups and Canadian and other international mining companies in Panama, fear that they may not be allowed into the country because a CBC fixer who was supposed to prepare their visit was denied entry 10 days ago.
  • Twitter now able to censor tweets by country
    With a recent policy change, Twitter is now censoring tweets by location, and restricting content by country.
  • International delegation calls for end to free expression violations and human rights defenders to be freed
    All human rights defenders and those in detention as a result of the National Safety laws enacted in Bahrain should be freed immediately, said a delegation of six international rights organisations visiting the country this past week to investigate freedom of expression.

  • CJFE visits Canadian Naser Al-Raas in Bahrain, facing 5 years in prison
    Canadian citizen Naser Al-Raas is facing imprisonment in Bahrain for exercising his rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly. He is currently facing a five-year prison term, of even graver concern as Mr. Al-Raas is suffering from medical problems that would very likely be aggravated in detention.
  • November 23: The 2011 International Day to End Impunity
    The International Day to End Impunity is a call to action to demand justice for those who have been killed for exercising their right to freedom of expression and shed light on the issue of impunity. Tara Singh Hayer was a publisher for the Indo-Canadian Times, who was shot and killed on November 18, 1998, in Surrey, British Columbia.
  • Mohamed Abdelfattah: 2011 International Press Freedom Award
    Abdelfattah, who had completed citizen journalism training with the International Centre for Journalists and had been blogging about human rights violations since early 2010, blogged about Said’s “torture-to-death,” as he calls it. By finding and showing eyewitness accounts, Abdelfattah blew away the government narrative regarding Said’s death.
  • A slow reform to free expression in Egypt
    The days immediately following Mubarak’s resignation were filled with hope and optimism for a renewed and democratic Egypt. The new constitution of the Arab Republic of Egypt was to include protections for free speech and press freedoms, allowing Egyptian civilians to finally speak freely after decades of being silenced. However, the celebrations following Mubarak’s ouster quickly ended.
