CJFE Program Assistant

Job Opening

Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is soliciting applications for the temporary 11-week position of Program Assistant, starting on Monday, June 19. The job is open to all post-secondary students who are planning to return to full-time studies in the fall of 2006.

CJFE is a non-profit, non-governmental organization based in Toronto that works to defend press freedom and freedom of expression in Canada and around the world. To that end, CJFE engages in various activities, including management of the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX) Clearing House, the Journalists in Distress Fund, the International Press Freedom Awards, as well as special public events on World Press Freedom Day and Word on the Street.

Job description:

The Program Assistant, will report to the Program Manager and will be responsible for the following:

  • Assist in the planning and preparation of the 2006 International Press Freedom Awards fundraising dinner in November
  • Assist in fundraising work including the processing of membership information, and outreach to prospective members
  • Carry out research and writing duties for the CJFE website
  • Conduct research on press freedom issues in Canada and on other topics
  • Support CJFE staff in planning for the CJFE Annual Meeting and the CJFE display at Word on the Street in September
  • Carry out administrative duties for CJFE as needed
  • Qualifications:

  • Must be planning to resume fulltime post-secondary studies in the fall of 2006
  • Must be under the age of 30.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Fluency in English; ability to work in French and/or Spanish considered an asset
  • Detail-oriented
  • Team player; works well independently
  • Computer literate (Word, Excel, Outlook Express, database management)
  • Website Development, Skills in HTML considered an asset
  • Previous experience (work or voluntary) in human rights, international development or journalism considered an asset
  • Interest in and awareness of current affairs

  • Term of employment:

    The position will start on Monday, June 19, and is a full-time (35 hours/week) 11-week position. Rate of pay: $350/week
