CJFE/IFEX is Seeking an Online Editor

International Freedom of Expression eXchange (IFEX), managed by Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE)

Full-time position, start date: February 2007
Deadline: February 8, 2007

The International Freedom of Expression eXchange (IFEX) is a network of over 70 organizations worldwide that promotes and defends the right to free expression. The IFEX Clearing House (or secretariat) is based in Toronto and managed by Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE), a member of IFEX.

The IFEX Clearing House seeks an online communication specialist to manage production of the weekly IFEX Communiqué and take responsibility for IFEX website maintenance, as well as participate in the development and implementation of new information products. Key responsibilities include writing the Communiqué, managing contractors and service providers, and information project management including conceptualization, implementation planning, managing project budgets, as well as project evaluation and reporting.

The IFEX Communiqué is read by more than 15,000 subscribers worldwide, who regard it as a valuable information tool to stay up to date on the latest developments in freedom of expression around the world. The IFEX website is considered the place of record for free expression information in the world today, attracting an average of more than 6 million page views and 800,000 visits per month. Unique among websites, it is a one-stop gateway on free expression, featuring news and information from the free expression organisations that belong to the IFEX network - and an archive of over 15,000 items dating back over 10 years.

Reporting to the IFEX Manager, the IFEX Online Editor collaborates with members of the Alerts and Outreach/Development teams and is in frequent contact with the IFEX membership.

JOB DESCRIPTION: ONLINE EDITOR

Responsibilities

  • Research, write and distribute the weekly IFEX Communiqué in English and manage production of additional language versions
  • Develop and implement overall IFEX communications strategy
  • Manage and maintain IFEX website content, design and format
  • Conceptualize and implement website content innovation projects, including developing information architecture and inputting content
  • Participate in the design and implementation of new free expression information resources
  • Promote and monitor use of IFEX information resources
  • Manage the Communiqué and Alerts subscriber database including implementing strategy to increase subscriptions annually
  • Create IFEX documentation and promotional materials, including editing and design
  • Maintain and update member profiles
  • Respond to free expression queries by members and general public
  • Participate in overall IFEX programme and project development, work planning, team meetings and budgeting
  • Qualifications

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in English - French and/or Spanish an asset
  • At least 3 years' independent journalistic writing/news editing experience, working to deadline
  • Experience with creative writing and/or marketing communications design and implementation
  • Strong Internet-based research skills
  • Website design and maintenance experience - including supporting content management systems, HTML coding, as well as familiarity with PHP and Java
  • University degree in related discipline or equivalent experience - e.g., in journalism, communications, political science or international development
  • Excellent understanding of human rights, freedom of expression and democratic development issues
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment while working independently and under pressure
  • Diplomacy and proven ability to work with people from various cultures and backgrounds
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills, strong attention to detail
  • Overseas work experience
  • Experience using MS-Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.
