Job purpose:
The IFEX Communications Specialist works to enhance the profile and reputation of IFEX and its members by implementing the strategic communication goals of the organisation as developed and articulated by IFEX. Priorities will be to lead the development of compelling and engaging, multi-platform communications which enable IFEX to draw attention to free expression issues and highlight the position of IFEX and its members as the leading global network on freedom of expression issues; oversee the development and implementation of IFEX’s media strategy and promotional materials; and oversee the management of some IFEX reports.

Duties and responsibilities of the Communications Specialist:
Implement and support effective external communications strategies across the organisation, which includes:
• Oversee the development and implementation of marketing materials, including digital
• Work with the IFEX Executive Director and Manager to implement IFEX’s media strategy
• Lead responsible for key IFEX communication vehicles including the daily and weekly e-newsletters and occasional special reports (on average, 2 per year).
• Lead Section Editors within Information and Awareness Raising Team
• Collaborate with the Online Editor to develop and assign story ideas for the IFEX website.
• Support the integration of communication efforts into IFEX activities
• Write, top-edit and proof articles and other communication materials, as required, written by IFEX team members and, where applicable, freelance and other external contributors.
• Assume lead role in developing and upholding editorial standards in accordance with IFEX Editorial Policy, leading Editorial Committee discussions and maintaining an IFEX CH Style Guide
• Liaise with printers, web designers and other suppliers as necessary.
• Manage assigned budgets in cooperation with the IFEX Finance and Administration Manager and the IFEX Manager
• Other duties as required

All IFEX staff members are expected to:
• Support the strategic goals and initiatives of IFEX, as articulated and developed by the IFEX Executive Director and Manager and approved by the IFEX Council
• Contribute in a positive, proactive, strategic and goal-oriented manner to the execution of IFEX programs and communications
• Participate in overall IFEX programme and project development, team meetings and bi-annual workplanning and budgeting
• Provide input to IFEX project proposals, reports to donors and reports to members
• Ensure that assigned deliverables in the IFEX workplan are on track
• Represent IFEX at conferences and events as required
• Ensure regular reporting of assigned work to management, Board, IFEX members, donors, and the public, as required.

Desirable experience, skills and qualifications:
• 5+ years’ experience in journalism and/or communications
• university degree in related discipline or equivalent experience
• strong understanding of journalistic editorial values and practices
• good understanding of marketing goals and strategies
• solid experience in leading teams
• strategic thinker
• familiarity with the human rights/free expression field
• demonstrated ability to write clear, concise and compelling prose
• demonstrated ability to edit and proofread the work of others
• demonstrated skill in digital media, including familiarity with social media channels
• excellent oral and written communication skills in English. French and/or Spanish an asset
• excellent organisation and administrative skills with strong attention to detail
• ability to work effectively with multiple, overlapping deadlines
• ability to self-direct
• personable and supportive team player
• strong work ethic and integrity
• Knowledge of a range of applications and software including social media platforms, content management systems, Microsoft Office
• eligible to work in Canada

Working conditions:
This position is based in Toronto, may involve flexible hours and occasional travel internationally.
