Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is seeking applications for the IFEX Online Editor for a one-year maternity leave contract. IFEX is a network of organisations worldwide that defend and promote the right to free expression (www.ifex.org). The IFEX Clearing House is based in Toronto, where it is managed by IFEX member organisation CJFE (www.cjfe.org).

IFEX mission: IFEX strives for a world where freedom of expression is respected, upheld and defended. IFEX enhances its members’ work by creating distinct opportunities for capacity building, joint advocacy and increased visibility – and significantly increases IFEX’s impact through collaborative campaigning and advocacy initiatives of national, regional and global significance. IFEX’s work is comprised of four key pillars:

  1. Information and Awareness-Raising: To leverage IFEX members’ advocacy efforts by processing, disseminating and showcasing their information and producing original analysis that is of global relevance
  2. Campaigns and Advocacy: To increase IFEX’s impact through collaborative campaigning and advocacy issues
  3. Network Development: to provide support opportunities that strengthen IFEX members and contribute to the development of the IFEX network as a diverse, engaged, and effective international freedom of expression community
  4. Institutional Strengthening and Sustainability: To strengthen and sustain IFEX as the leading global network on freedom of expression issues

Job purpose:
The IFEX Online Editor works to grow and enhance the profile and reputation of IFEX and its members by managing the IFEX.org website according to the communications goals and strategies as developed and articulated by IFEX. The Online Editor develops and manages editorial content on IFEX.org including all aspects of the IFEX monthly In Context; and provides strategic input on the development of appropriate online content for the Network Development and Campaigns and Advocacy programmes. The priority in this role is to develop compelling and engaging multimedia content that will enable IFEX to draw attention to free expression issues and highlight the position of IFEX and its members as the leading global network on freedom of expression issues.

Duties and responsibilities of the Online Editor:

Develop and manage editorial content on IFEX.org, which includes:

  • · Manage, implement and evaluate website strategy, within the context of IFEX’s overall strategic goals
    · Manage and oversee all content aspects of the IFEX website and IFEX monthly In Context, including planning, writing, commissioning the editorial, written and multimedia content contributions, editing and uploading
    · Coordinate the translation of web content into other languages and oversee websites in additional languages as required
    · Liaise with external suppliers such as web technical support, developers and others as required
    · Provide strategic input on the development of appropriate online content to support IFEX work in the areas of Network Development and Campaigns and Advocacy
    · Manage assigned budgets in cooperation with the IFEX Finance and Administration Manager and the IFEX Manager
    · Other duties as required

All IFEX staff members are expected to:

  • · Support the strategic goals and initiatives of IFEX, as articulated and developed by the IFEX Executive Director and Manager and approved by the IFEX Council
    · Contribute in a positive, proactive, strategic and goal-oriented manner to the execution of IFEX programmes and communications
    · Participate in overall IFEX programme and project development, team meetings and bi-annual workplanning and budgeting
    · Provide input to IFEX project proposals, reports to donors and reports to members
    · Ensure that assigned deliverables in the IFEX workplan are on track
    · Represent IFEX at conferences and events as required
    · Ensure regular reporting of assigned work to management, Board, IFEX members, donors, and the public, as required

Qualifications

Desirable experience, skills and qualifications:

  • · 5 years’ independent journalistic writing and news editing experience, working to deadline, including multimedia content development skills and writing for the web
    · University degree in related discipline or equivalent experience – e.g., in journalism, communications, political science or international development
    · Excellent oral and written communications skills in English. Spanish, French and/or Arabic an asset
    · Strategic thinker
    · Strong Internet-based research skills
    · Excellent knowledge of a range of applications and software including content management systems, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite and others as required
    · Excellent understanding of human rights, freedom of expression and democratic development issues
    · Ability to exercise sound judgment while working independently and under pressure
    · Diplomacy and proven ability to work with people from various cultures and backgrounds
    · Excellent organisational and administrative skills, strong attention to detail
