Reflections on courage: A Canadian journalist reminisces about losing a colleague to assassins and facing death threats.
Impunity is aword used too often when we talk about press freedom and the violations against it. In this context, it means lack of punishment, of investigation, of justice for those who commit crimes against journalists. Those who attack, harrass, persecute and even murder do not have to face, much les suffer, any punishment. Knowledge that impunity exists within a country has a domino effect, encouraging others to commit crimes, knowing that they will also go unpunished.

The theme of this year’s World Press Freedom Day is the safety of journalists and impunity. CJFE explores these issues by focusing on three different countries/regions, highlighting the dangers and obstacles journalists face in those parts of the world.

World Press Freedom Day
World Press Freedom Day recognizes the sacrifices made in the struggle for freedom of the press and to pressure governments that continue to deny their citizens this basic human right. The May 3 message is that journalists everywhere must be granted the right to report freely and without fear. To view IFEX's special World Press Freedom Day page click here

Why does press freedom matter?
The date marks the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, a statement of principles drawn up by African journalists in 1991 calling for a free, independent and pluralistic media on that continent and throughout the world. The Declaration affirms that a free press is essential to the existence of democracy and a fundamental human goal. The declaration is a milestone in the struggle for a free press in all regions of the world. To read more about UNESCO’s World Press Freedom Day campaign click here.
