CJFE and a coalition of human rights groups call for the immediate and unconditional release of prominent Tibetan blogger, writer and intellectual Druklo, who goes by the pen name Shokjang. Shokjang was detained by authorities in March 2015. After nearly a year with no formal charges, he was sentenced in February 2016 to three years in prison for 'inciting separatism', a charge he has rejected. Read more
CJFE is saddened and outraged by the brutal murder of Bangladeshi secular blogger Nazimuddin Samad on April 6, 2016. Samad, a 26-year old law student at Jagannath University in Dhaka, was reportedly walking home with a friend when he was intercepted by three assailants on a motorcycle, who attacked him with machetes before shooting him. We, the undersigned, are alarmed by the Ontario Superior Court ruling that Vice News reporter Ben Makuch must hand over all communications between him and an ISIS fighter to the RCMP. This ruling sets a dangerous precedent and deals a blow to press freedom and the integrity of journalism in Canada. Read more
The undersigned members of the Sport for Rights coalition, express our relief over the release of 15 political prisoners in Azerbaijan. Human rights defender Rasul Jafarov, the founder of the Sport for Rights campaign, stepped out from Baku’s Prison Number 10 into freedom on 17 March after spending 593 days unjustly jailed. Read more
CJFE calls for the immediate release of Rami Jarrah, a Syrian citizen journalist and co-founder of ANA News Media Association, an independent citizen press group. Jarrah was arrested on 16 February, 2016, in the Turkish city of Gaziantep; details on his detainment are currently unavailable, and no charges have been announced. Jarrah was a 2011 recipient of CJFE's International Press Freedom Award for his work in the public interest. Read more
CJFE is concerned with the lack of public transparency and the suppression of public information during Council and Committee meetings held in the Township of Southgate. We call for the Council to allow audio and video recordings at all public meetings and committees. Full transparency of public information is necessary for residents to monitor the deliberations their elected body, which is responsible to its constituency. Read more
