Every two years, IFEX gathers its members from around the globe for its General Meeting. Each meeting takes place in a different location, and the 2013 gathering is taking place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The event is being co-hosted by the Cambodian Centre for Human Rights (CCHR). CCHR is a great organization doing important work to protect human rights defenders in the country. Learn more about the state of free expression in Cambodia on the IFEX website.

The actual gathering is broken into two parts. The General Meeting runs June 17-18, and is limited to member organizations to discuss the operations of the network itself. The IFEX Strategy Conference then takes place from June 19-20. This component brings additional resources, experts, and free expression activists together to network and share skills. It is also an opportunity to work together to brainstorm solutions to challenges that we all face in trying to tackle issues like impunity, campaigning, and strengthening our organizations.

The entire meeting is a chance for individuals and organizations to make new partnerships, network, and share their experiences in defending and promoting free expression around the world. One of the benefits of IFEX is that it is more than just a clearing house of information – it really is a network, and a partnership between members. This meeting highlights the truly global nature of the IFEX network, as well as the similar challenges that countries around the world are facing in defending and promoting free expression.

In addition to participating in a number of the conference sessions, CJFE will also be co-facilitating a networking session about supporting Journalists in Distress, and presenting at a skills exchange on digital tools.
