Stand up for free expression and speak out against out-of-control CSEC spying

Monday, September 22, 2014

CJFE is a part of the Protect Our Privacy coalition, a group of organizations united in support of this statement:

"More than ever, Canadians need strong, genuinely transparent, and properly enforced safeguards to secure privacy rights. We call on Government to put in place effective legal measures to protect the privacy of every resident of Canada against intrusion by government entities."

Today the coalition is launching a new video, created by OpenMedia, showcasing just how CSEC could be monitoring you, your family, and countless other people across the country.

It’s time to call for an end to warrantless mass surveillance in Canada.

“CSEC is flagrantly abusing the digital rights of Canadians, and doing so without any substantive oversight,” says CJFE Executive Director Tom Henheffer. “With the fear of government surveillance eroding confidence in the ability to communicate privately, Canadians face a chill on free expression that threatens to shake the very foundations of our democracy. This situation must not stand.”

This is a crucial time to spread the word about CSEC spying. Decision-makers from across the political spectrum are speaking out and calling for action. Proposed new legislation was recently announced that would take great strides toward reining in CSEC.

Now that Parliament is back in session, we need to make sure MPs hear from as many Canadians as possible. That’s why it’s so important we spread the word.

Please share this video and help gain support across Canada: It’s time to stand up against reckless surveillance, and the resulting chill on free expression in the country.
