Call for Nominations for CJFE Tara Singh Hayer Press Freedom Award

Friday, June 9, 2000
very year more than 2,000 attacks on journalists and media organizations are registered around the world. For the most part, the heroes who work under these adverse and dangerous conditions are unsung. Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) honours those who adhere to their principles and even risk their lives to keep the news media free with Press Freedom Awards. CJFE recognizes that freedom of expression is not just an international, but a Canadian issue too. In 1999, the Canadian Press Freedom Award was re-named in honour of Tara Singh Hayer, a Canadian journalist and editor of the Indo-Canadian Times of Vancouver, who was assassinated in November 1998. His murder shocked the community with the realization that freedom of expression issues are not only a problem outside our borders. The Tara Singh Hayer Award will recognize a journalist who, through his or her work, has made an important contribution to reinforcing and promoting the principle of freedom of the press in this country of elsewhere. Submissions could include work highlighting cases of media repression in another country, attempts at or actual censorship, work involving difficult-to-obtain access to information requests, or in which the journalist faced significant risk or threat - physical or otherwise. Applications are invited from Canadian journalists working for news media organizations full-, part-time, or freelance. Submissions in French or English may be in the form of video tapes, audio tapes, articles or columns aired or published between July 1, 1999 and June 30, 2000. A single piece of work may be submitted, or a series limited to four items on the same subject. Please submit two complete copies of the work. Submissions should be accompanied by a letter outlining the journalist's professional background and how the work fulfils the stated criteria. Any relevant follow-up information, such as litigation or the public impact of the work may also be included. THE AWARD consists of a framed plaque and cash prize of $2,000.
