We encourage and support individuals and groups to be vigilant in the protection of their own and others’ free expression rights. Along with other free speech groups and media outlets, we also intervene in court cases to create better laws protecting expression.

Call for Nominations: Code of Silence 2017
The Canadian Association of Journalists, the Centre for Free Expression, News Media Canada and the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression are inviting nominations for the Code of Silence Award for outstanding achievement in government secrecy. The award will be given annually in each of four categories -- federal, provincial, municipal and police services – starting this fall.

CJFE partners with SurfEasy to distribute 200 VPN licences to Journalists in Distress
Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is proud to partner with SurfEasy to help journalists avoid surveillance and potential persecution under repressive regimes. 200 Virtual Private Network (VPN) licenses will be provided for free to journalists around the world who contact or apply to CJFE’s Journalists in Distress Program, which provides humanitarian assistance and resources to journalists around the world whose lives and well-being are threatened because of their work.

Press Defenceless: House Fails to Pass Shield Bill
Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is disappointed that the House of Commons failed to pass Bill S-231, the Journalistic Source Protection Act, before rising for summer recess. By failing to pass the bill now the House has missed a crucial chance to taken a stand for press freedom, and to extend badly-needed protections to confidential sources. Its swift passage needs to be a priority when MPs return in the fall.

CJFE Challenges The Rebel With Free Speech Ad Campaign
On June 17, 2017, Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) attended a rally by far-right media group The Rebel. At the event, dubbed ‘The Rebel Live’, CJFE contracted a video billboard truck owned by outdoor marketing company Wild On Media and displayed a video advertisement in support of CJFE’s latest campaign. This campaign seeks to challenge public assumptions about human rights in Canada.
