CJFE Hails Court Ruling as Important Advance for Press Freedom in Canada
Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) today hailed the Ontario Court of Appeal's decision affirming the news media's right to publish information in the public's interest as a significant victory for freedom of expression.
"The decision will decrease the chilling effect of potential libel suits on reporters and editors," CJFE President Arnold Amber said. "This changes the whole ballgame. Editors and reporters will now have more freedom to go after stories of public interest that they were frightened to touch before," Amber added.

Canadian Library Association gives CJFE award
The Canadian Library Association (CLA) is honoured to announce the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) as the 2007 recipient of the award for the Advancement of Intellectual Freedom in Canada.
It has been said that there has never been a famine in a democratic society with access to information and a free press. When people go hungry it's usually because there is already a scarcity of truthful reporting. CJFE campaigns to defend and promote free expression – as a cornerstone right that allows people to assert their right to food, to work, to assemble and to vote.

CJFE appalled at attack on journalist in Mississauga, Ontario
CJFE is appalled and shocked by the news that journalist Jawaad Faizi was attacked in Mississauga, Ontario on the evening of April 17. Faizi works for the Mississauga-based newspaper, The Pakistan Post.
Jawaad Faizi describes being attacked by two men in his car outside the home of his Editor, Amir Arain. Two men, one armed with a cricket bat, smashed the car windows and hit Faizi inside the car. When they saw Faizi call 911 on his cell phone, they fled the scene. Paramedics and police, and his editor arrived soon afterwards.

CJFE calls for Tunisian government to end crackdown on human rights activists and journalists
On 7 November, members of the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX) Tunisia Monitoring Group (TMG) will call on Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali to intervene to end the persecution of journalists and Internet users in advance of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). In particular, the group is concerned over the official response to the continuing hunger strike by human rights defenders and journalists and says the date of 7 November, the anniversary of the day President Ben Ali took power, is traditionally marked with the release of prisoners.
