By Amy Johnson Dear CJFE members and supporters, The clocks are changing this weekend, which can only mean one thing – fall is here, and it’s almost time for the CJFE Gala: A Night to Honour Courageous Reporting. If you haven’t already done so, there’s still time to purchase your ticket online! Held on Wednesday, December 4, at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto, the Gala will honour four journalists with the 2013 International Press Freedom Awards for their courageous reporting, risking their safety and their freedom. We are proud to recognize the important work of Ahmet Şık of Turkey, and Dessale Berekhet Abraham, Mebrahtu Teclesion Berhe and Ruth Zecarias Ghebre of Eritrea. Keep an eye out for an announcement coming soon about this year’s Canadian Integrity Award winner. For questions about tickets or sponsorship for the CJFE Gala, contact Kirsten Hering at firstname.lastname@example.org or (416) 515-9622 x.231.
What happened in OctoberAs we noted earlier this month, October has been a time of transition at CJFE. Joining the team is Tom Henheffer, CJFE’s new Executive Director. At the same time we say goodbyes to CJFE Manager Julie Payne, who has worked with CJFE for the last decade (she will continue to work on the annual Gala until mid-Dec), and Annie Game, who’s moved to IFEX full-time as Executive Director. Don’t worry though, we never let former staff, interns, or volunteers stray too far – you’re sure to hear more from these two in the future! Other October updates: • CJFE held a very successful event, Ai Weiwei: Voices of Freedom at the Art Gallery of Ontario to honour the Chinese dissident artist on October 2. Check out the photo gallery and reflections on the event • José Peralta, our 2013/2014 Scotiabank/CJFE Journalism Fellow at Massey College, was interviewed by Carmen Gomez-Cotta about life in Toronto and free expression in Uruguay • On the international front, CJFE issued alerts on free expression infractions in China, Morocco, and Somalia, and advocated for the release of the Greenpeace activists detained in Russia • Looking back at the 2012 'Maple Spring' student protests over tuition hikes in Quebec, Radostina Pavlova examined how the uprisings impacted the state of free expression in the province
What's coming up in November• November 1 marks the launch of the global campaign to end impunity, culminating in the International Day to End Impunity on November 23. Stay tuned for details on CJFE's activities for the campaign, and read more about the campaign in our #FollowFriday blog post. • More details and articles regarding the CJFE Gala to come, including the announcement of the Integrity Award winner and features on the state of free expression in Turkey and Eritrea. Keep checking our Gala page for more updates. For more free expression news, commentary, and event updates, visit cjfe.org! Until soon, Amy Johnson
