Aaron Cantú, a staff writer for the Santa Fe Reporter and editor at The New Inquiry, faces a felony charge of rioting, which carries a statutory maximum of 10 years in prison if convicted; while professional photographer Alexei Wood faces a statutory maximum of more than 70 years in prison on additional rioting and destruction of property charges.

CJFE deeply concerned by erosion of press freedom rights in U.S.
CJFE is deeply concerned by a suggestion made by United States Attorney General Jeff Sessions that the federal government might reconsider federal policies that currently prevent compelling journalists to divulge information about confidential sources. This is a transparent and ham-fisted attempt to blame the media for a series of voluntary leaks which have originated from within the faltering Trump administration over the past few months.

Global coalition demands “Five Eyes” protect encryption
CJFE joins 83 organizations and individuals from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States demanding that our governments defend strong encryption. The letter comes on the heels of a meeting in Ottawa of the ministers responsible for the “Five Eyes” intelligence agencies.

CJFE is deeply concerned by reports that American journalist Dan Heyman was recently arrested for asking questions to White House aides Tom Price and Kellyanne Conway at the West Virginia Capitol. Heyman's arrest was baseless, and troubling for the state of press freedom in the United States.

Charges against journalists covering inaguration protests must be dropped
Six journalists covering the inauguration protests in Washington DC have been charged with felony rioting, which carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $25,000. This is an unacceptable assault on press freedom and an act of intimidation against journalists just for doing their job. All charges must be dropped immediately.

The potential dangers of the Trump presidency have civil liberties groups in the U.S. preparing to devote significantly more resources to protecting press freedom in America. Despite the differences between our Prime Minister and the incoming American President, press freedom in Canada will need to be defended every bit as vigorously in 2017 as in the United States.

CJFE condemns search and seizure of journalist's devices by U.S. Border Patrol
CJFE is deeply concerned by the October 1, 2016, seizure of electronic devices owned by journalist Edward Ou. Mr. Ou is an award-winning Canadian photojournalist who has spent years reporting from the frontlines of social movements. In early October, Mr. Ou sought entry to the United States via the Vancouver Airport and was on his way to cover protests at Standing Rock, North Dakota, on behalf of Canada’s national broadcaster, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).
