CJFE has compiled a list of interesting events for the month of June that celebrate the importance of free expression and press freedom in a variety of ways. From awards galas to annual general meetings, these events span the nation and present opportunities to support free expression in Canada.

CJFE Annual General Meeting 2013Date: Thursday, June 6, 2013 Location: The NOW Lounge, 189 Church Street, Toronto, ON Time: 6:00 pm Doors open 6:30-730 pm: Members-only business meeting 8:00 pm: Public Event - Canadian Science in Crisis: Research, Responsibility and the Right to Speak, an interview between world renowned Canadian climatologist Gordon McBean and host of CBC’s The Current, Anna Maria Tremonti. CJFE’s 2013 Annual General Meeting will take the form of a two part event. The evening begins with a members-only business meeting, followed by a public conversation between Gordon McBean and Anna Maria Tremonti regarding the intersection of climate change science and freedom of expression, and the muzzling of government scientists in Canada. Liberty Awards Gala for the B.C. Civil Liberties AssociationDate: Wednesday, June 12, 2013 Location: Performance Works Theatre, Granville Island, 1218 Cartwright St., Vancouver Time: 6:30-9:30 pm The 2013 Liberty Awards Gala celebrates achievements in the fields of human rights and civil liberties in Canada. This event is the BCCLA’s main fundraising initiative of the year and promises to be both elegant and informative, as there will be a cocktail reception, silent auction, awards ceremony, and a keynote address by Dr. David Suzuki. Tickets: Individual tickets are $110, while tables of 10 can be purchased for $1100. Tickets can be purchased here.
Canadian Journalism Foundation AwardsDate: Thursday, June 13, 2013 Location: The Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Toronto, ON Time: 6:00pm-TBD The Canadian Journalism Foundation Awards celebrate the very best of journalistic excellence in Canada, and bring together a variety of media personalities and players who help to produce a dynamic civil society. Amanda Lang, senior business correspondent for CBC News and co-anchor of The Lang and O’Leary Exchange, will host this year’s event. Tickets: Individual tickets are $600, while tables can be purchased for $6000. Tickets can be purchased here.
Canadian Ethnic Media Association AwardsDate: Friday, June 21, 2013. Location: Velma Rogers Graham Theatre, Rogers Building, 333 Bloor Street East, Toronto Time: 6:00pm: Doors open 7:00pm: Awards presentation 9:15pm: Post-awards reception The 35th Annual CEMA Awards Gala coincides with National Aboriginal Day and will celebrate excellence and diversity in journalism in the categories of Print, Radio, Television and Internet. Five media awards will be presented in addition to the Sierhey Khmara Ziniak Award. The CEMA Innovation Award will be given to an organization that “demonstrates outstanding contributions to diverse, fair and equitable coverage and [an] accurate representation of Canada’s citizenry.” There will be performances by professional entertainers in between awards presentations and the reception will be held on a rooftop patio.
