UNHRC Must Investigate Blogger and Activist Murders in Bangladesh
CJFE joined PEN America and 14 other organizations in calling for the United Nations Human Rights Council to establish a Commission of Inquiry into the murders of at least nine writers, bloggers, publishers, academics, and activists in Bangladesh since February 2015, including four in the last month alone. Dozens of others have been attacked or threatened for the expression of their views.

CJFE condemns the detention of Canadian scientist Robert Penner in Nepal, and is alarmed by Nepal’s decision to expel him from the country. Penner’s treatment calls into question whether or not foreigners will be permitted to enjoy free speech rights in Nepal, and casts a chill on everyone in the country who criticizes powerful institutions.

CJFE condemns murder of Bangladeshi editor Xulhaz Mannan
CJFE condemns in the strongest possible terms the brutal murder of Bangladeshi LGBT activist and editor Xulhaz Mannan, and his friend and colleague Tanay Mojumdar, on April 24. Mannan was the editor of Roopbaan, Bangladesh’s first and only LGBT magazine, which argued for greater acceptance and tolerance of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in Bangladeshi society.

CJFE condemns arrest of Bangladeshi editor Shafik Rehman
CJFE strongly condemns the arrest of opposition journalist and senior editor Shafik Rehman on April 16, 2016. Rehman was arrested on suspicion of sedition and allegedly conspiring in a plot to kill the son of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed. Rehman’s arrest occurs amid a worrying deterioration of press freedom in Bangladesh, specifically targeting opposition media.

Coalition of NGOs intervene before European Court for imprisoned journalist Khadija Ismayilova
One of Azerbaijan’s most prominent investigative journalists, Ismayilova is among the few courageous journalists willing to report on risky topics such as human rights violations and corruption. She was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison in September 2015, after being convicted of charges that the coalition believes are retribution for her reports on corruption involving senior government officials.

Free imprisoned blogger Shokjang, civil society groups tell Chinese authorities
CJFE and a coalition of human rights groups call for the immediate and unconditional release of prominent Tibetan blogger, writer and intellectual Druklo, who goes by the pen name Shokjang. Shokjang was detained by authorities in March 2015. After nearly a year with no formal charges, he was sentenced in February 2016 to three years in prison for 'inciting separatism', a charge he has rejected.
