Dear CJFE members and supporters, We cannot thank you enough for your support of CJFE and our work defending of free expression. And this December 3rd, we want to see you in person. At our annual CJFE Gala: A Night to Honour Courageous Reporting, we feature stories that we would never have known about if people had not risked their jobs, their freedom or even their lives to tell us. This annual event is an opportunity to hear these stories and pay tribute to some of these brave individuals. Purchase tickets for the 2014 CJFE Gala: A Night to Honour Courageous Reporting. Award winners and photo exhibit This week we announced that we will be honouring Kathy Gannon, a veteran Canadian reporter who had her time in Afghanistan cut short when she was attacked while covering the country’s national elections. Anja Neidringhaus, an AP photographer and Gannon’s partner, was killed in that same attack. We’ll be showcasing her award-winning work as this year’s photo exhibit, with prints of the photographs available for sale in a silent auction. Proceeds from the Gala directly support CJFE’s critical work This includes the Journalists in Distress fund, which provides grants for emergency surgery, temporary housing and relocation expenses to media workers whose lives are being threatened. Proceeds also enable us to advocate for stronger free expression legislation in Canada, and lead important international campaigns, such as #FreeAJstaff, the fight to free Mohammed Fahmy and his jailed colleagues in Egypt. Please join us at our annual Gala. We’ve only announced a small segment of the evening’s programming, so keep checking cjfe.org for information about the evening, our award winners, and more! Thank you for your continued support, and please feel free to contact me should you have any comments or questions. I can be reached at (416) 515-9622 ext. 226 or [email protected] Best Wishes, Tom Henheffer CJFE Executive Director
