Here in the office we have come to accept that each year at CJFE is busier than the last, and 2014 has been no exception. The year has been a tumultuous one for press freedom, as the world has seen an increase in the number of journalists killed and imprisoned. However, there have also been some important victories for free expression that we can’t afford to overlook, and CJFE has been working hard to affect positive change. Internationally, much of CJFE’s work for the past year has been focused on the #FreeAJstaff campaign, supporting our colleagues in Bahrain as they face imprisonment, and monitoring free expression violations around the world. In Canada, we’ve successfully defeated legislation that threatened the journalistic integrity of the CBC, stood up for your right to privacy, helped reintroduce anti-SLAPP legislation in Ontario, and launched our fifth annual Review of Free Expression in Canada. Even our website has seen a great deal of progress (with much more exciting things to come in 2015, so stay tuned!). We have more than doubled our traffic this year, and have continued to build an amazing team of volunteers who help us produce so much of our in-depth content. In short – it’s been quite a year! To help showcase some of our activities and accomplishments, we put together a short timeline to highlight some of the important work that we’ve done this past year. Scroll through our 2014 timeline below, and be sure to come back to see what we’re working on in 2015! Want to help support more of this kind of work? Become a member of CJFE.
