Hate speech ruling disappointing, but contains some gains for free expression
(TORONTO, February 27, 2013) Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) welcomes the more clearly and narrowly defined definition of hate speech contained in today’s decision by the Supreme Court in the case of Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission v. William Whatcott, but continues to be concerned that hate speech remains partially in the purview of the human rights tribunals.

Watching case of Canadian whistleblower, Edgar Schmidt
TORONTO (January 16, 2013) Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is watching with great interest the case brought before Federal court by Department of Justice lawyer Edgar Schmidt. Schmidt’s position appears to be that the Canadian Justice Department has not carried out its duties in reporting to Parliament areas of new legislation, which are not in compliance with the Canadian Charter of Rights.

TORONTO, Nov. 20, 2012 - On December 5, 2012, Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) will honour Mae Azango of Liberia, Rami Jarrah of Syria, Canadian media lawyer Dan Henry, and Enquête, Radio-Canada's investigative television program, with awards for their courageous reporting and commitment to freedom of expression, often in the face of threats. TORONTO (October 23, 2012) - Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is honoured to present its 2012 Tara Singh Hayer Memorial Award to Enquête, Radio-Canada’s investigative television program, for taking great risks to expose major cases of corruption in Québec. The award will be presented at the 15th Annual CJFE Gala, to be held December 5, 2012, at the Fairmont Royal York hotel in Toronto.

CJFE calls for nominations for 2012 International Press Freedom Awards
CJFE bestows two International Press Freedom Awards every year in recognition of the courage of journalists who work tirelessly — often risking their lives — so that the news media remain free. The awards will be presented in December, at CJFE's Annual Gala.
Last year's award winners were Khaled al-Hammadi, from Yemen, and Mohamed Abdelfattah, from Egypt.
Award nominations must be submitted no later than Friday, June 29, 2012.
