Journalist Death Toll in Iraq War Matches 1991 Gulf War Total
Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) notes with dismay that the war in Iraq, not yet three weeks old, has already claimed the same number of journalists as the 1991 Gulf War, which lasted six weeks.
"Four colleagues have been killed in fighting so far and three others lost their lives outside combat," CJFE Executive Director Joel Ruimy said.
"That compares with the four colleagues lost during all of the six-week Gulf War in 1991. The best thing we can do now for journalists covering the war is stay vigilant and continue to speak out in their defence."

Targeting Journalists in Iraq
Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) expressed dismay today at the alarming number of press-freedom violations against journalists covering the conflict in Iraq.
"The war enters its third week with an unacceptable number of attacks on journalists just doing their jobs," CJFE Executive Director Joel Ruimy said.
"All sides involved in the conflict would do well to remember that journalists are in the service of their readers, viewers and listeners around the world; they are entitled to fair and humane treatment as they struggle to cover the war."
