CJFE Calls For Halt To Attacks On Media In Palestinian Territories
Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) calls for an investigation into the killing yesterday of an Italian journalist and the earlier armed attacks on dozens of others journalists in the West Bank.
Israeli soldiers shot and killed Italian freelance photographer Raffaele Ciriello in the town of Ramallah yesterday. Ciriello, on assignment for the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, was hit six times in the chest and died shortly afterwards. Another freelance journalist, not immediately identified, was severely injured in the incident.

Release of Burmese journalist and CJFE International Press Freedom Award winner Myo Myint Nyein
CJFE today welcomed news that the Burmese military junta has released journalist Myo Myint Nyein from prison.
Nyein was freed yesterday along with three other members of Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy and a member of the Democratic Party for New Society, a disbanded pro-democracy youth party. The move was thought to be an apparent goodwill gesture timed to coincide with a visit by United Nations human rights envoy Paulo Sergio Pinheiro.

Regina Leader-Post reporters accuse paper's editors of censorship
Reporters at the Regina Leader-Post say they are the latest victims of censorship by their owner, CanWest Global Communications.
Most of the daily's journalists began a byline strike yesterday after editors rewrote a story on a speech delivered on March 6 by Haroon Siddiqui, the editorial page editor emeritus of The Toronto Star.
The reporters say that Siddiqui's comments on media convergence and alleged censorship in the CanWest newspaper chain were altered in the account published in yesterday's edition of the Leader-Post.

CJFE, along with Massey College and the Donner Foundation, today announce the creation of the new Donner/CJFE Journalist At Risk Fellowship, an experimental one-year program to give a deserving foreign journalist a mid-career sabbatical in Canada.

Death of kidnapped reporter Daniel Pearl shocks CJFE
Today's announcement that reporter Daniel Pearl was murdered has stunned CJFE, which considers his death a shocking attack on press freedom.
According to news reports, Pearl's employer, the Wall Street Journal, said it had evidence from the United States State Department and police officials from the Pakistani province of Sind to confirm that the reporter was killed by his captors.
"We are outraged and saddened by the news," said CJFE Executive Director Joel Ruimy, whose organization had been monitoring developments in the case.

I write on behalf of Canadian Journalists for Free Expression to protest the decision by your government to bar journalist Moe Sihota from attending a provincial government media lock-up on 17 January 2002.
Mr. Sihota was previously a New Democratic Party Member of the Legislative Assembly. But since last year, he has been a commentator-host with CIVI-TV in Victoria. He has also resigned his membership in the NDP.

Keewatin-Patricia District School Board Bullies Local Media
Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is astonished by the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board's move to determine what constitutes quality journalism.
Dave McLeod, the Board's director of education, said in an interview aired March 18, 2002, on the CBC Radio program "Ontario Today" that the Board will pull its advertising from newspapers and broadcast outlets it deems to be unbalanced or factually inaccurate in its coverage of Board affairs.

Toronto Star Reporter Kathleen Kenna Injured In Ambush In Afghanistan
Reporter Kathleen Kenna of the The Toronto Star daily newspaper was seriously injured today in an ambush by unidentified gunmen.
Kenna, her husband Hadi Dadashian, Toronto Star photographer Bernard Weil and an Afghan driver were travelling on the main road from Kabul to Gardez when their car was attacked by at least two people.
An explosion rocked Kenna's side of the car, wounding her severely in the leg. A second explosion hit the other side of the car. The attackers disappeared immediately.
