CJFE Condemns Tape Seizure
Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) condemns the decision by Toronto police to use a warrant to seize raw news footage from the CTV program "W-5" earlier this week.
"This move imperils free expression and press freedom in Canada," CJFE Executive Director Joel Ruimy said, adding that CJFE fully endorses CTV's decision to challenge the warrant in court. "It is a threat to the public's right to receive information unfiltered by police.

CJFE Marks World Press Freedom Day
Around the world, CJFE and other organizations will mark World Press Freedom Day by highlighting the fundamental principles of press freedom and training the spotlight on infringements on that right.
Friday, May 3, is the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, a statement of principles drawn up by African journalists in 1991 calling for a free, independent and pluralistic media on that continent and throughout the world. The Declaration affirms that a free press is essential to the existence of democracy and a fundamental human-rights goal.

CJFE Solicits Applications for Journalist at Risk Fellowship
Canadian Journalists for Free Expression is seeking applications from foreign journalists for the Donner/CJFE Journalist at Risk Fellowship.
The Fellowship aims to provide a deserving foreign journalist with a mid-career sabbatical in which s/he can spend an academic year at Massey College in Toronto auditing courses of his or her choice, expanding contacts with Canadian colleagues and acquiring new journalistic skills that can be put to use upon return to his or her country.

CJFE Welcomes Canada's Efforts to Find Truth in Kazakhstan
Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) welcomes news that two Ontario coroners have arrived in the Kazakhstani capital of Almaty to investigate circumstances surrounding the death of Leila Bayseitova.
"We are gratified that Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham made good on his commitment to push for the truth in this case," CJFE Executive Director Joel Ruimy said.
"And we call on Kazakhstani authorities to extend full co-operation to the two Ontario experts now investigating the case."

CJFE Welcomes Court Ruling on National Post, RCMP
Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) welcomes a court ruling allowing the CBC and The Globe and Mail to join a legal challenge of a search warrant and assistance order granted against the National Post.
"The ruling comes as a heartening development in the fight for press freedoms," CJFE Executive Director Joel Ruimy said. "We strongly support the National Post in its efforts to defend a journalist's right to communicate with confidential sources.

Colombian Journalist Murdered; Country's 8th So Far This Year
Canadian Journalists for Free Expression is outraged by the murder of a colleague in Colombia, the eighth killing of a journalist in that country since the beginning of the year.
Efrain Alberto Varela Noriega, owner of Radio Meridiano-70 and host of two political programs on that station, was shot dead in front of two of his relatives after his car was stopped on a rural road in the northeastern Colombian department of Arauca.

Lira Bayseitova of Kazakhstan, and the three co-founders of the Somali radio and television network HornAfrik Media Inc. were honoured November 13 for their work in upholding freedom of the press under challenging conditions at the fifth annual Canadian Journalists for Free Expression International Press Freedom Awards Dinner, the signature event of the year for Canada's journalistic community and its supporters.

International Reaction to Firing of Mills
The decision by CanWest Global Communications Corp. to dismiss Russell Mills from the post of publisher of the Ottawa Citizen has sent shockwaves through the international journalistic community.
What follows is the verbatim text of a statement released today by the Vienna-based International Press Institute, which says Canada's "outstanding reputation for freedom of the press has been badly damaged" by the firing.
