An attempt was made on the life of crime reporter Michel Auger on September 13, 2000, just one day after a two-page investigative piece on the biker war in Quebec appeared in Le Journal de Montréal, the province's largest newspaper. The attack angered and shocked journalists and the general public across Canada. The attack on Auger was interpreted by police as an attempt to silence the journalist and stop his relentless coverage of the biker wars in the province. In awarding Auger the CJFE Tara Singh Hayer Memorial Award, Globe and Mail reporter Jan Wong said that Auger did some of the most difficult and dangerous reporting in Canada. Wong said that Auger had done not just one story but covered the important issue on a consistent basis for many years. "Even in a democracy like Canada, there are limits to freedom of the press and we depend on journalists like Auger to push the limits," Wong said.
