Job Posting: CJFE Web and Social Media Editor Term of contract: 25 hours/week, one-year contract Location: Toronto Remuneration: Commensurate with experience Application Deadline: July 22, 2011 Start: mid August 2011 Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is a non-profit, charitable organisation, created in 1981, whose vision is to achieve universal respect for and protection of the right to free expression and access to information. With a small, dedicated staff, we champion the free expression rights of journalists and media workers around the world and in Canada. And with this new position, we are looking to grow! Position Summary: This position is an exciting opportunity for a skilled online writer and editor to work in a fast-paced, friendly and dynamic environment, working on the vital human rights issue of free expression. The Web and Social Media Editor will be an important part of the work to make CJFE’s website and online communications the Canadian leader in this field. RESPONSIBILITIES Website The Web and Social Media Editor will be directly responsible for managing and maintaining all content on CJFE’s website. The website is in the midst of a two-year redesign, and will be the major focus of the position, both in terms of the production of articles, updates, videos, feature stories etc., and in the ongoing repackaging of content and building of resources for various sections of the website. This work will involve looking for creative ways and resources to support the continued growth of the website. The Web and Social Media Editor will also contribute to CJFE’s publications and articles for the Free Expression section of J Source. Social Media The Web and Social Media Editor will be responsible for increasing our online engagement through the use of social media such as Facebook and Twitter. As the Web and Social Media Editor you will: • Work with the CJFE Manager to develop and implement an editorial strategy for the website that includes a content workflow plan and develop online and social media policies and guidelines. • Create original written pieces for the website, in addition to editing and sourcing articles, photos and other content. • Create and or assign other types of content including live blogs for CJFE events and videos for CJFE’s You tube channel. • Seek out volunteers with diverse backgrounds, skills and expertise in order to produce different types of content on a wide variety of free expression issues. • Analyze site design and content and recommend and or make improvements related to graphic design, layout, navigation and copy • Manage and grow online communities on Facebook and Twitter and develop creative and effective ways to integrate these platforms and their content with that of the website. • Evaluate CJFE’s online presence using tools such as Google analytics • Work with the CJFE Manager to develop new ways to maximize revenue generation, through donation/payment tools and/or identification of new funding opportunities EXPERIENCE • Undergraduate degree or college diploma in journalism, communications, or other related field • One to two years’ experience developing and maintaining web-based content SKILLS • Superior writing and editing skills • Understanding of how to adapt writing styles for different genres such as social media, websites and blogs • Works well independently and with other members of a team • Interest in and awareness of current affairs and free expression issues • Experience finding, managing and motivating volunteers • Ability to produce clean, publish-ready copy with minimal oversight • Ability to work under tight deadlines • Self-motivated, takes initiative, creative and professional. • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point) • Familiarity with web communications, web architecture and navigation, web design and web content strategies. • Familiarity with video editing software such as iMovie • Knowledge of Canadian Press Style PREFERRED: • Web programming/development skills • Proficient in advanced HTML, web editing tools, such as DreamWeaver, ScribbleLive platform • Ability to work in another language, especially French or Spanish HOW TO APPLY: Please submit a cover letter, resume, relevant clips and links to online work such as blogs or Twitter streams by email to [email protected].
