Good evening ladies & gentlemen,

I would like first to express my appreciation to all those who have contributed to freedom of the press around the globe.

It is because of these people that so many truths have arisen from neglect. And it is because of them that we are gathered here today.

Please allow me also to salute the brave Syrian journalists and of course to render my equal respects to all of those who have risked their lives to convey the truth, wherever they may be. People like Rami Al Sayed, Marie Colvin, Basil Shehadeh & Mika Yamamoto all lost their lives representing our freedom of mind.

I am proud of my son Rami Jarrah and the risks he took to share the realities of Syria. He was supposed to be here himself to receive this award, and I am honored to be here on his behalf.

And finally I would like to thank Canadian Journalists for Free Expression for their efforts on supporting free journalism.

I would like to now dedicate the following poem to all those whom I have mentioned and to all the others who risked their lives for the truth.
