    Ahead of Canada’s May 2 federal election, CJFE encourages you to ask your local candidates about their stance on critical free expression issues. Each week CJFE will post questions which you can e-mail, call or write to your candidates. We’d love to know what they say, and what your thoughts are too.
  • Defending the Hyperlink
    A landmark case concerning hyperlink liability is the first in Canada to reach the Supreme Court and has broad implications for free expression online. Wayne Crookes, a former Green Party campaign manager and businessman, is suing writer Jon Newton for defamation based on a hyperlink to an online article written by Newton that contained allegedly libellous statements.

    As political parties and local candidates campaign for your vote, CJFE encourages you to take the time to ask your candidates about their stance on critical free expression issues. Week One, ask your candidates if they support a public inquiry into the G20 Summit.
  • Upcoming Event: World Press Freedom Day
    On May 3, organizations around the world will celebrate World Press Freedom Day, raising awareness about concerns in their own countries and around the globe. This year's main event will be held in the United States, where whistleblowing has been a hot topic of discussion. CJFE will be hosting a panel discussion in Toronto, looking at issues relating to access to information in Canada.
  • Opening up free expression in Tunisia
    Following the ousting of President Ben Ali's regime in Tunisia on January 14, the interim government has taken action to promote freedom of expression and press freedom. CJFE welcomes these positive steps, and urges the interim government to continue in this direction.
  • Campaigning for a Free Internet on World Day Against Cyber Censorship
    World Day Against Cyber Censorship was launched on March 12, 2008, by Reporters Without Borders to rally support for a free Internet without restrictions and accessible to all. In 2011, CJFE is advancing the campaign for a free internet by highlighting two bloggers and journalists who have been arrested or harassed for expressing their views online, Hossein Derakhshan and Oleg Kashin.
  • Celebrating Women Journalists for International Women's Day
    In honour of the centenary of International Women's Day on March 8, 2011, CJFE is highlighting the work of four female journalists: Jila Baniyaghoub, Li Jianhong, Irina Khalip and Jineth Bedoya Lima.
  • Call for a public inquiry into the G20 Summit
    Eight months ago the policing of the G20 Summit in Toronto resulted in numerous free expression violations. Although CJFE and many other organizations have called for a public inquiry, the Government of Canada has yet to implement one.

  • Restrictions and intimidation of journalists in Libya
    Originally peaceful anti-government protests in Libya turned violent as government forces clashed with protesters. As of February 22, over 200 deaths had been reported. Since the beginning of the protests, both foreign and local media have been faced with restrictions on their movement into and around Libya. Local journalists have also been harassed and detained by government forces.

    A visit to a memorial for murdered journalists at the Newseum in Washington, DC, gives Mexican journalist Luis Horacio Nájera a chance to reflect. Mr. Nájera is also one of CJFE's 2010 International Press Freedom Award recipients.
