Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is a non-profit, charitable organization, created in 1981, whose vision is to achieve universal respect for and protection of the right to free expression and access to information. With a small, dedicated staff, we champion the free expression rights of journalists and media workers around the world and in Canada.

Position Summary: This position is one which combines a high degree of responsibility and many opportunities for achievement, job satisfaction and growth, working in a fast-paced, friendly and dynamic environment. Reporting to the Executive Director the CJFE Manager is responsible for programmatic and operational leadership of Canadian Journalists for Free Expression. They will work closely with volunteers, Board and committee members, and will manage a staff of one.


Program Management
• Develops CJFE program strategy with the Executive Director, in consultation with CJFE board and manages the implementation of that strategy, including work planning, project development, fundraising and budget planning
• Oversees program and project implementation, and ensures deliverables are on track for such programs as the Journalists in Distress program, the Journalism Fellowship at Massey College, the CJFE website and other communications etc.
• Manages the work of volunteers, students, interns, committees, contractors and the Web and Social Media Editor.

Fundraising and Financial Management
• Develops fundraising strategy in consultation with the Executive Director and Finance committee, and implements that strategy including identifying possible sources of governmental, private and foundation funding; submitting applications for funding to a wide variety of sources based on CJFE’s strategic priorities; developing and nurturing strategic relationships with donors, partners and other allies
• Develops and coordinates all aspects of membership program including renewal drives, fundraising campaigns, communication, planning of Annual General Meeting, tax receipting and adherence to CRA regulations
• Develops CJFE’s and CIFET’s annual budgets, and working with Manager of Finance and Administration, ensures that the organisation meets its targets
• Oversees all aspects of CJFE's annual fundraiser, the CJFE Gala, including hiring and overseeing an event coordinator and other contractors, overseeing relationships with Chairs and sponsors, and overseeing all programmatic elements of the gala.

Communications, Outreach & Advocacy
• Oversees the development and coordinating of the CJFE website which is central to the operation of CJFE including its programs, advocacy and fundraising.
• Coordinates advocacy work on international and national free expression issues which includes developing policy papers, legal factums, organizing and participation in campaigns etc.
• Develops communication strategy for the organization and coordinates CJFE representation at key strategic events and speaks for the organization on various issues at events or in media interviews
• Oversees and coordinates production of CJFE’s publications (click here to view) along with other forms of communication including social media, the Free Expression section of J Source, etc.
• With the Executive Director, develops strategy for raising the profile of the organisation, and implements this strategy which may include planning public events, ad campaigns and other forms of outreach.

• 3-5 years of experience in a position managing people and programs/projects, preferably for a non-profit organization
• Proven ability to exercise diplomacy and good judgment combined with a high level
of initiative and self direction
• Superior written and spoken communication skills
• Excellent organization skills and administrative leadership. Has the ability to effectively prioritize demanding and competing projects and manage deliverables in a fast-paced environment
• Experience working with volunteers, volunteer committees and Board members as well as sourcing and building relationships with sponsors, donors and members
• An understanding of current affairs and good knowledge of free expression issues/human rights
• Minimum of undergraduate degree in journalism, communications, international development or other related field
• Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite
• Demonstrated experience in writing fundraising proposals and grant stewardship
• Experience in events management with a track-record of fundraising success

• Ability to work in another language, especially French or Spanish
• Experience with budgeting and financial reporting in non-profit organizations
• Experience using Income Manager, NAV or other fundraising and financial software systems.
• Web programming/management experience
