Dear General Roesdihardjo,

Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE)is writing to express concern over the attack recently committed against Edi Saputra Hasibuan, a reporter with "Pos Kota" daily. We have learned that Mr. Hasibuan was beaten up by members of the Islamic Defender Front (Front Pembela Islam, FPI) on July 7 while covering the group's protest in front of the National Police Headquarters. CJFE is an independent organization which is dedicated to the protection of journalists and the promotion of freedom of expression worldwide according to Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

We take this opportunity to express our concern and condemn the violent assault against Mr. Hasibuan. This incident violated his basic human rights and points to the deterioration of the state of press freedom in Indonesia. Journalists should be able to carry out their professional duties without fear of harassment and attack. Incidents such as the attack on Mr. Hasibuan foster a climate of fear that inhibits journalistic investigation and the public's right to information.

We urge you to carry out a full investigation of the assault against Mr. Hasibuan without delay, and to ensure that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice. CJFE asks you to guarantee journalists' safety, and will be monitoring the treatment of Mr. Hasibuan's case on behalf of the international freedom of expression community.

Yours Sincerely,

Sharmini Peries
CJFE Executive Director
