CJFE welcomes Security Council resolution on Sierra Leone

Monday, August 28, 2000

The Honourable Lloyd Axworthy
Minister of Foreign Affairs
House of Commons
Ottawa, ON
K1A 0A6

Dear Minister Axworthy,

I write to commend your office and that of Ambassador Paul Heinbecker following the passing of Resolution 1315 (2000) by the Security Council last week.

Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) has been working closely with Sierra Leone Canada Watch over the past three years to help in some measure with the country's recovery from a brutal war. Amongst the thousands of civilians who were victimized, many journalists were targetted for reporting on the atrocities.

Our view is that justice and reconciliation are necessary building blocks of any lasting peace. For this reason we enthusiastically welcome the resolution of the Security Council calling for an independent special court for Sierra Leone.

I hope that Canada will continue to show leadership on the Security Council by being prepared to contribute some of the resources needed to make the special court functional.

Yours sincerely,

Sharmini Peries
Executive Director

cc. Paul Heinbecker, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations
