Dear Ambassador,

I am writing on behalf of Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE), a non-profit, non-governmental organization that works to promote and protect press freedom and freedom of expression around the world.

CJFE is concerned by the continued pre-trial detention of investigative journalist Tomislav Kezarovski in Shutka prison in Skopje, Macedonia. Mr. Kezarovski has recently been ordered to spend an additional thirty days in detention to the two-month detainment he received – he is accused of revealing the identity of a witness in an article published in 2008. Mr. Kezarovski has recently begun a hunger strike in protest to his detention, and has been denied access to the daily newspapers for which he pays and the open-air exercise he is entitled to.

CJFE believes that the actions taken against Mr. Kezarovski indicate a violation of his right to freedom of expression; we do not believe that Mr. Kezarovski’s journalism warrants detention.

CJFE urges the government of the Republic of Macedonia to immediately release Mr. Kezarovski and uphold the free expression rights of all Macedonians.

We thank you for your attention and I look forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,
Arnold Amber, CJFE President
