We encourage the government to consider the constitutional rights of workers, including impacts to the right to free association and expression that would come from the implementation of this law.

Toronto: Banning protests you don't like is not the answer
CJFE is deeply concerned by an administrative inquiry being conducted by Toronto Ward 10 Councillor James Pasternak. According to a report from CTV, Pasternak has asked the deputy city manager to assess the feasibility of banning ‘hate-sponsored’ rallies from city property. Some proposed remedies include the power to issue trespass orders, fine for extra police services or possibly to freeze bank accounts. Pasternak’s inquiry will be presented to the city’s executive committee before it is debated.

CJFE to honour Elena Milashina, Robyn Doolittle and Kim Bolan for fearless reporting at 2017 Gala
On November 30, CJFE will honour three extraordinary women for their courage in reporting at the 2017 CJFE Gala in Toronto. Elena Milashina of Russia will be given the International Press Freedom Award, The Globe and Mail’s Robyn Doolittle will be awarded the Arnold Amber Award for Investigative Journalism, and Kim Bolan of the Vancouver Sun will be honoured with the Tara Singh Hayer Memorial Award.

Civil Society Organizations Send Letters on Behalf of Chelsea Manning
October 23, 2017, OTTAWA—Over 40 prominent civil society organizations, elected officials, university professors and professionals have sent letters in support of human rights activist Chelsea Manning, who was recently turned away at the Canadian border. The letters are united in their call to reverse the government’s decision to bar Ms. Manning from Canada, and were submitted by her legal counsel as part of a formal request for reconsideration to the Hon. Minister Ahmed Hussen on Friday morning.

Stand.earth: Enbridge Serves then Swerves
On a quiet Tuesday afternoon, October 17, 2017, staff in the Vancouver office of environmental advocacy organization Stand.earth (formerly ForestEthics) were participating in an online call about campaign strategy. Only the day before, Stand had won an historic judgement in a lawsuit by forestry giant Resolute had targeted Stand and Greenpeace attempting to use anti-mob Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) laws to silence their free speech.
