Al Jazeera English and CJFE are calling for the release of Al Jazeera journalists currently detained in Egypt. Join us as we stand in solidarity with our imprisoned colleagues and tell the world that journalism is NOT a crime.
Background:
On December 29th, 2013, Al Jazeera journalists Mohamed Fahmy, Peter Greste, and Baher Mohamed were detained under unjustified accusations that they were “spreading false news” and connected with a terrorist organization. For the international community, their imprisonment represents the unlawful suppression of press freedom by Egyptian authorities.
The three journalists, among 20 individuals charged, pleaded not guilty to the charges against them when they appeared before an Egyptian court on February 20th. Unfortunately, with their trial adjourned to March 5th, Fahmy, Grest, and Mohamed remain detained indefinitely.
Al Jazeera English and CJFE have started a petition, issued a joint statement with other concerned organizations, and recently held a press conference in Toronto to call for the journalists’ immediate release. But it’s time to do more. Join us on February 27.
